Kolkata’s silver screen icon Koel Mallick has taken a bold step into politics, filing her nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections as a Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate. The announcement comes hot on the heels of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s selection of four candidates for the March 16 polls, with Mallick’s name shining among them.

Accompanied by supporters, the actress arrived at the nomination venue exuding confidence. ‘I’m thrilled about this new chapter in my life,’ she declared. ‘With your love and support, I aim to serve the nation and my state with utmost dedication and honesty.’ Notably, senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy was spotted by her side, signaling strong backing.

Mallick, who has been associated with TMC since 2003, isn’t just a film star. She’s a committed social worker, focusing on widows and underprivileged children for years. Daughter of legendary actor Ranjit Mallick, she has dominated Bengali cinema for over two decades, with recent successes on OTT platforms and big screens alike. Her latest film ‘Mitin: Ekti Khunir Sandhaney,’ released in December 2024, garnered rave regional reviews and earned her the Best Actress award at G24 Hours.

TMC’s strategy appears clear: leveraging cultural figures to amplify voices from arts and grassroots levels in Parliament. The other nominees include Babul Supriyo and Rajeev Kumar. As polls near, all eyes are on whether Mallick’s charisma will translate into political success.

This move underscores TMC’s blend of stardom and service, potentially reshaping Bengal’s representation in the Upper House. Stay tuned for election updates.
