New Delhi is stepping up efforts to bring back stranded passengers from Gulf cities as escalating tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran force widespread closures of Middle East airspace. In a coordinated response, Indian airlines are set to operate 58 special flights on Wednesday, prioritizing the safe return of thousands affected by the disruptions.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation announced that these flights will primarily be handled by major carriers: 30 by IndiGo and 23 by Air India and Air India Express combined. This initiative comes at a critical time when foreign airlines operating between India and the Gulf are running on limited schedules, dictated by volatile airspace conditions and operational constraints.

To navigate the restrictions, Indian airlines have meticulously adjusted their schedules, rerouting long-haul flights through alternative paths that avoid prohibited zones. This gradual resumption ensures continuity while upholding the highest safety standards amid the regional unrest.

Reports highlight special flights from key Gulf hubs like Dubai and Fujairah, touching down at major Indian airports including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Ahmedabad, and Thiruvananthapuram. Airlines such as Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air are at the forefront, providing vital lifelines for passengers stuck abroad.

Authorities urge travelers not to head to Dubai International or Al Maktoum International airports without confirmed departure times from their airlines. Dubai’s airspace remains partially open, allowing select commercial flights, with Emirates and IndiGo maintaining limited services and issuing real-time updates via their websites.

Etihad Airways has canceled all scheduled flights from Abu Dhabi until 2 PM local time on March 5, though cargo and repatriation flights may proceed in coordination with UAE officials. Other international carriers are similarly scaling back, offering services only where feasible.

Passenger safety remains paramount, according to the Civil Aviation Ministry. All airlines have been directed to maintain transparent communication, adhere to refund and rescheduling policies, and provide necessary assistance. The ministry is closely monitoring airline operations and airfares to prevent any unjustified price hikes during this period.

This robust response underscores India’s commitment to its citizens overseas, ensuring they are not left stranded as geopolitical tensions reshape global aviation routes. Travelers are advised to stay updated through official channels for the latest developments.
