Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport buzzed with emotion on Wednesday as pilgrims stranded in Saudi Arabia during their Umrah journey finally touched down at Terminal 2. Family members and well-wishers gathered in large numbers, their faces lighting up with relief and joy. The safe return of these travelers, caught amid rising Middle East tensions, has sparked widespread gratitude towards the Indian government’s swift intervention.

Dozens of devotees from Gujarat had traveled to Saudi Arabia for the sacred Umrah pilgrimage. Their return flights, scheduled for February 28, were abruptly canceled due to escalating conflicts linked to Israel-Iran hostilities. Reports indicate that missile strikes by Israel on Iranian targets triggered massive explosions in Tehran, heightening regional instability and disrupting air travel across the Gulf.

One relieved family member shared, ‘My sister was performing Umrah when her flight got canceled on the 28th. She was terrified, but we appealed to the government, and officials ensured her safe passage home. This is the happiest day for our family.’

Another relative recounted, ‘My son went to Mecca for Umrah. His flight was grounded amid the chaos. Both media coverage and government support played a crucial role in bringing him back safely. The authorities were incredibly responsive.’

Families didn’t hold back their appreciation. ‘These were tough days, but we’re thankful to the government. Thank you, PM Modi,’ said a third member, echoing sentiments shared by many.

The backdrop to this drama involves Israel’s military actions against Iran, defended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as targeted strikes against ‘collective terrorists.’ He praised U.S. President Donald Trump’s steadfast resolve, noting Trump’s repeated warnings—over 74 times—that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons. The White House released a compilation of Trump’s statements spanning 15 years, underscoring a consistent policy.

As celebrations continue in Ahmedabad, this episode highlights the vital role of diplomatic efforts in protecting citizens abroad during geopolitical crises. The pilgrims’ homecoming serves as a testament to effective coordination between Indian missions and airlines, ensuring no one is left behind.
