New Delhi has bolstered its maritime defenses with two major procurement contracts worth a staggering ₹5,083 crore. In a strategic move announced on March 3, the Ministry of Defence sealed deals for advanced helicopters for the Indian Coast Guard and potent air defense missiles for the Indian Navy.

The first agreement, valued at approximately ₹2,901 crore, involves Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bengaluru supplying six state-of-the-art Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-III tailored for maritime roles. These twin-engine helicopters represent a significant upgrade over existing fleets, offering enhanced power, safety, and versatility.

Designed for offshore operations, the ALHs will safeguard oil platforms, artificial islands, and vital sea infrastructure. They will play a crucial role in rescuing fishermen, conducting search-and-rescue missions, and monitoring marine environments. Capable of operating from ships, these helicopters will extend the Coast Guard’s reach across India’s vast exclusive economic zone.

This procurement isn’t just about military might; it’s an economic booster too. Over 200 small and medium enterprises will benefit, generating around 65 lakh man-hours of employment. It underscores India’s push towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

Complementing this, the Navy secures ₹2,182 crore worth of vertical-launch Shtil air defense missiles from Russia’s JSC Rosoboronexport. These all-weather missiles are engineered to neutralize enemy aircraft, helicopters, drones, and other aerial threats with rapid response capabilities.

Mounted on major warships, the Shtil systems will fortify naval air defenses, ensuring safer operations in contested waters. This deal highlights the enduring defense partnership between India and Russia, a collaboration spanning decades and built on mutual trust.

As regional tensions simmer, these acquisitions signal India’s commitment to a robust blue-water navy and comprehensive coastal security. The deals arrive at a critical juncture, enhancing deterrence and operational readiness against evolving threats.
