KOLKATA: In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s West Bengal unit has named Rahul Sinha, former state president and national secretary, as its candidate for one of the five seats up for grabs.
Rahul Sinha brings a wealth of experience to the table. A prominent figure in West Bengal politics, he previously led the BJP’s state organization during a period of significant growth. Under his leadership, the party expanded its base, spearheaded key agitations, and emerged as a vocal opposition force against the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Known for his outspoken demeanor and unwavering commitment, Sinha has consistently championed the party’s ideology. His national role further honed his skills in navigating complex political landscapes. Party leaders emphasize that his nomination strengthens the BJP’s presence in the upper house, ensuring robust representation for Bengal’s issues.
The elections, scheduled for March 16, involve five seats. With the assembly’s composition favoring Trinamool Congress, the ruling party is poised to secure four. The BJP, holding the numbers for one, positions Sinha as its uncontested pick in that slot.
Trinamool announced its quartet last week: former DGP Rajeev Kumar, IT Minister and singer Babul Supriyo, senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, and actress Koyel Mallick. These seats fall vacant due to term endings for Subrata Bakshi, Ritabrata Banerjee, and Saket Gokhale, plus Mausam Benazir Noor’s resignation to join Congress.
The CPI(M)’s seat, held by Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, also expires, but with no assembly strength, it defaults to BJP. Barring surprises in nominations, an uncontested election looms, underscoring the mathematical realities of Bengal’s legislature.
This development signals BJP’s intent to fortify its parliamentary voice from Bengal, with Sinha poised to amplify concerns on governance, development, and minority rights in the national forum.
