New Delhi: The West Indies cricket team’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign came to a disappointing end with a loss to India in the Super-8 stage, but their journey home is far from over. Stranded in India due to international flight restrictions triggered by escalating tensions in the Middle East, including strikes on Iran by the US and Israel, the Caribbean players face an uncertain wait.

Windies Cricket (CWI) is closely monitoring the situation. In a statement, the board assured fans that it is collaborating with the International Cricket Council (ICC), government authorities, and airline partners to secure safe travel arrangements at the earliest. ‘The safety and well-being of our players, coaches, and officials remain our top priority,’ CWI emphasized.

This delay isn’t isolated. The Zimbabwe cricket team, fresh from their own successful stint in the tournament, is also stuck in India, hampered by the same regional crisis disrupting air travel. Zimbabwe Cricket revealed they are awaiting ICC’s emergency travel protocols to proceed.

Despite the exit, West Indies had a stellar group stage, winning all four matches. They crushed Scotland by 35 runs, outplayed England by 30 runs, demolished Nepal by 9 wickets, and wrapped up with a 42-run victory over Italy. Their Super-8 started brightly with a 107-run thrashing of Zimbabwe, but defeats to South Africa (by 9 wickets) and India (by 5 wickets) sealed their fate.

As global geopolitics casts a shadow over sports, cricket fans worldwide hope for a swift resolution, allowing these teams to return home safely. CWI promises updates as arrangements firm up, underscoring the unpredictable intersection of international events and athletic pursuits.
