The Zimbabwe national cricket team finds itself stuck in India, unable to return home after their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign ended in disappointment. Escalating tensions in the Middle East have disrupted air travel, particularly routes through Dubai, leaving the squad in limbo in New Delhi.

Under captain Sikandar Raza, Zimbabwe punched above their weight in the group stage, remaining unbeaten and securing stunning victories over former champions Australia and Sri Lanka. Their momentum faltered in the Super 8 stage, where they lost all three Group 1 matches, including a five-wicket defeat to South Africa at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Despite the setbacks, the team bowed out with heads held high, showcasing resilience against top-tier opposition.

Originally scheduled to transit via Dubai, the team’s travel plans hit a snag when the airport there shut down due to regional instability. Zimbabwe Cricket issued a statement on Monday confirming the players’ safety in India but highlighting the travel disruptions caused by the volatile situation.

‘Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) confirms that the senior men’s team is safe in India following the conclusion of their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign,’ the statement read. ‘The team was due to return home via Dubai, but changing circumstances in the Middle East have impacted travel plans, resulting in disruptions to essential transit routes.’

ZC is now coordinating with the International Cricket Council (ICC) for alternative arrangements. The ICC has activated emergency protocols, engaging international airlines to facilitate safe and timely repatriation. Ongoing discussions involve ZC, ICC officials, and team management to resolve the issue swiftly.

Head coach Justin Sammons had earlier noted the uncertainty surrounding travel post their final Super 8 loss. As the cricket world watches, updates are promised as new information emerges. This unprecedented situation underscores the broader impacts of geopolitical tensions on global sports.
