In a thrilling Super 8 clash at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, West Indies’ Shimron Hetmyer etched his name into cricket history. Facing India on Sunday, the left-handed powerhouse smashed 27 runs off just 12 balls, including two massive sixes and a boundary. This explosive knock propelled him to become the batsman with the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup edition.

Hetmyer’s tally now stands at an astonishing 19 sixes in the 2026 tournament, surpassing Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan’s 18. Nicholas Pooran sits third with 17 from 2024, while Chris Gayle (2012) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (2024) share fourth place with 16 each.

Opting to bowl first after losing the toss, India watched West Indies post a formidable 195 for 4. Captain Shai Hope and Roston Chase laid the foundation with a 68-run opening stand in 8.5 overs. Hope fell for 32 off 33 balls, featuring three fours and a six.

Chase then partnered with Hetmyer for 34 runs before the latter’s departure. At 119 for 4, Jason Holder and Rovman Powell unleashed a game-changing 76-run stand off 35 balls. Powell remained not out on 34 from 19 deliveries (3 fours, 2 sixes), while Holder smashed an unbeaten 37 off 22 balls with five boundaries.

India’s Jasprit Bumrah starred with 2 wickets, supported by Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakaravarthy. Suryakumar Yadav’s unchanged XI included Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Bumrah. West Indies replaced Brandon King with Akeal Hosein under Hope’s leadership.
