Global Flights Canceled as Middle East Airspace Shuts Down

Tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran have triggered a massive shutdown of West Asian airspace, throwing the global aviation sector into chaos. Hundreds of flights worldwide have been grounded, with airlines scrambling to reroute others amid emergency safety restrictions.

By Sunday, critical air corridors had imposed stringent no-fly zones, forcing carriers across regions to cancel services or divert paths. Industry estimates reveal over 700 flights scrapped globally, while countless others are taking elongated routes to skirt conflict zones. What began as precautionary measures has snowballed into a full-blown operational nightmare.

Key transit hubs in West Asia—vital for international aviation—are either completely off-limits to civilian aircraft or operating under severe navigational curbs. Airspaces over Iran, Israel, and neighboring states are heavily impacted, slashing normal flight volumes dramatically.

Major Gulf hubs like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha have halted traffic, triggering ripple delays across global networks. Routes linking Asia, Europe, and North America, which rely heavily on Middle East overflights, are bearing the brunt.

Indian airlines, particularly dependent on Gulf transit paths, are among the hardest hit. Indigo alone has axed more than 350 flights over three days: 166 on March 1, 162 on March 2, and 43 on March 3. This represents 7-8% of their typical daily operations of 2,100-2,200 flights.

Air India and Air India Express have suspended or rerouted multiple services to the Gulf and West Asia following security advisories. Globally, giants like Emirates have canceled or diverted flights, while Lufthansa has reshuffled schedules to prioritize passenger safety.

Aircraft now endure circuitous journeys, hiking flight times, fuel consumption, and operating costs. For an industry still recovering from past disruptions, this adds acute financial strain. Aviation leaders warn of prolonged disruptions unless regional tensions ease swiftly.
