New Delhi is buzzing with Holi preparations, but experts warn that synthetic colors flooding the markets could turn celebrations sour. These vibrant powders and pastes often contain toxic heavy metals like lead, mercury, and chromium, along with industrial dyes and even engine oil residues. Annually, millions of tons of such hazardous materials are smeared across skins, leading to immediate distress and long-term health risks.

Skin reactions kick in fast: burning sensations, intense itching, redness, swelling, and eczema flare-ups are common. Facial skin, being the thinnest and most exposed, bears the brunt. Pre-existing conditions like acne, psoriasis, vitiligo, or sensitive skin worsen dramatically post-play. Children face heightened dangers from lead absorption, while pregnant women risk fetal harm. Eyes suffer from irritation, watering, and grittiness; hair falls out, and nails weaken.

Long-term shadows include dark hyperpigmentation spots and chronic allergies. Dermatologists urge prevention over cure. Before stepping into the fray, coat face, neck, arms, and legs with coconut, almond, mustard, or sesame oil to create a protective shield. Layer on moisturizer and sunscreen, apply lip balm, and polish nails clear. Sunglasses guard eyes from rogue splashes.

After the fun, rinse with cool water using gentle oil-based cleansers—never rub harshly, as it aggravates scratches. Hydrate immediately with moisturizer. Seek medical help for persistent rashes or burns.

The safest bet? Whip up herbal colors at home. Spinach, coriander, or neem puree yields green; turmeric, gram flour, marigold petals make yellow; beetroot, carrot, pomegranate peels, hibiscus, or henna craft reds and oranges; blue from indigo flowers; pink from rose or onion skins. These natural hues nourish skin, rinse easily, and spare the environment the toxic aftermath. Celebrate Holi safely this year—your skin will thank you.
