Puducherry received a major development push on Sunday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth over ₹2,700 crore. These initiatives span infrastructure upgrades, enhanced citizen services, industrial advancement, education, world-class healthcare, and sustainable growth efforts.
Addressing a large gathering, PM Modi expressed his honor in visiting Puducherry, a land of saints, poets, and freedom fighters. He highlighted the legacy of poet Subramania Bharati, who ignited nationalism here, and the spiritual vision offered by Sri Aurobindo and The Mother to the world.
Recalling his earlier visit, the Prime Minister reiterated the ‘BEST Puducherry’ mantra—Business, Education, Spirituality, and Tourism. Over the past four and a half years, this vision has materialized through effective governance and rapid development. He emphasized that synergy between the central government and the union territory yields swift, superior results.
Puducherry has showcased impressive growth with a sharp rise in per capita income and the highest social progress index score in the country. The double-engine NDA government is committed to accelerating this momentum. Today’s projects mark a significant step forward.
PM Modi noted the nationwide push for high-quality infrastructure, with a record ₹12 lakh crore allocated in this year’s budget. Puducherry benefits directly, now included in the capital investment scheme previously exclusive to states. This funding will improve roads, water supply, coastal infrastructure, schools, and hospitals.
Key projects include the launch of PM e-Bus services, an Integrated Command and Control Centre under the Smart City Mission, housing for economically weaker sections via CITIIS scheme, and upgrades to sewage and water supply systems. Educational and health boosts feature the APJ Abdul Kalam Engineering Block and Ganga Hostel at NIT Karaikal, modernization of JIPMER’s Regional Cancer Centre, and new buildings at Pondicherry University.
The 750-acre Karasur-Sedarapet Industrial Estate was dedicated to the nation, alongside water supply projects for clean drinking water. Foundation stones were laid for 41 rural roads under PM Gram Sadak Yojana, heritage town development, and mangrove conservation under the MISHTI initiative.
These developments position Puducherry as a model for balanced, inclusive progress, blending tradition with modernity.
