In the heart of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district lies Baharampur, a city steeped in history and now buzzing with electoral fervor. As the administrative hub of the district, this eighth-oldest municipality in the state boasts a legacy that intertwines colonial past with modern-day politics.

Established by the British East India Company in June 1757 following the Battle of Plassey, Baharampur served as a key military cantonment until 1870. Its transformation into a municipality in 1876 marked the beginning of its urban evolution. But it’s the echoes of 1857 that truly define its historical significance—the first major armed clash of the Sepoy Mutiny erupted here under the rule of Raja Krishnanath.

Barrack Square, a 40-acre expanse designed by Archibald Campbell in 1767, was the epicenter of that rebellion. Once housing British officers’ residences and barracks, it now serves as a public playground, a poignant reminder of resistance against colonial might. Today, government offices dot the area, blending the old with the new.

Economically vibrant, Baharampur thrives on silk weaving, rice and oilseed milling, and intricate metalwork. The famed ‘Khagrain Kansa’, a bell-metal alloy, and the delectable fried sweet ‘Chanobora’ are local treasures that draw admirers from afar.

Strategically located 186 km north of Kolkata, the city connects to nearby towns like Kandi, Jiaganj, and Lalbag. Its assembly constituency, formed in 1951 and renamed from Barahampur in 2011, has witnessed fierce contests. Congress dominated with eight wins, followed by RSP (three), CPI (two), and an independent in 2006. Post-delimitation, BJP’s Subrata Maitra clinched victory in 2021, signaling shifting winds.

As campaigns heat up, Baharampur’s historic grounds prepare for another battle—not of muskets, but of ballots—where the past informs the political future.
