Tensions in the Middle East have reached a boiling point following Israel’s recent strikes on Iran, sending shockwaves across the globe. The escalating conflict has put the spotlight on the safety of Indian nationals working and living in the volatile region. Prominent voices in India’s political landscape are raising alarms and urging swift action from the government.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor took to social media platform X to assure the public of his coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). ‘I’m in touch with the Indian Foreign Ministry. Advisories are being issued for Indian citizens across the region. Common sense dictates staying away from US and allied military bases amid these attacks,’ he posted. Tharoor highlighted reports of an ‘Asian citizen’ killed in a missile strike on Abu Dhabi, ending with a heartfelt plea: ‘Friends, stay safe.’
Echoing these concerns, Congress leader KC Venugopal, a Lok Sabha MP, expressed deep worry over the joint Israel-US military actions in Iran. With thousands of Indians, including many from Kerala, employed in the area, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Venugopal appealed directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the MEA to ensure the security and well-being of stranded Indians through urgent diplomatic and logistical measures. He specifically called for safe evacuation routes for those most at risk and eager to return home.
From Kashmir, Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s assault on Iran. He criticized the lack of international accountability for Israel’s actions, particularly against Palestinians, which he believes has emboldened further aggression. ‘In league with the US, Israel is pushing the region toward a dangerous escalation that threatens a major regional war and global peace,’ Farooq stated, offering prayers for Iran’s resilient people.
Meanwhile, Australia has voiced its stance, standing with Iranians against their government’s oppressive actions. Citing Iran’s ballistic missile program, nuclear ambitions, and support for armed proxies, Canberra recalled two attacks on Australian soil in 2024 targeting the Jewish community. In response, Australia expelled Iran’s ambassador, suspended operations at its Tehran embassy, and listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorism-promoting entity. As the world watches this powder keg, the international community grapples with the far-reaching implications for peace and stability.
