New Delhi witnessed a pivotal discussion on science communication and policy research as Dr. Geeta Vani Raisam, Director of CSIR-NIScPR, addressed a key workshop. Emphasizing the institute’s evolution from the merger of two esteemed bodies, she outlined its mission to bolster evidence-based policymaking and effective science outreach in India.
The institute, born from this strategic union, is designed to meet contemporary demands in science communication and policy research. Dr. Raisam highlighted its commitment to advancing India’s rich scientific legacy through rigorous research and dissemination. Beyond policy work, CSIR-NIScPR publishes 15 research journals under a diamond open access model, freely available online. These span engineering, materials science, chemistry, biology, and interdisciplinary fields, including specialized ones on traditional knowledge, natural products, and intellectual property.
In the context of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Dr. Raisam stressed the need to promote Indian journals. She urged participants to contribute as editors, reviewers, or by submitting papers, and to spread awareness within the scientific community. ‘Self-reliance extends beyond technology to strengthening our research and knowledge ecosystems,’ she asserted.
The workshop focused on India’s semiconductor ecosystem, where CSIR-NIScPR conducts extensive policy research to provide evidence for government decisions, especially in resource-constrained environments. A recent study by Dr. Shev’s team compared models from the US, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and China, recommending tailored strategies for India.
Dr. Raisam cautioned against blind imitation. ‘India’s challenges are unique; solutions must fit our context while adhering to global standards,’ she said. The event will present study findings, gather expert inputs, and culminate in a white paper for policymakers.
Recognizing the semiconductor sector’s rapid evolution, she affirmed ongoing reviews to keep India competitive. This proactive approach positions CSIR-NIScPR as a vital pillar for India’s scientific and technological advancement.
