In the rugged hills of Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, a quiet revolution is unfolding. Women, long confined to household chores, are now scripting their own success stories through skill training under the Prime Minister’s Kaushal Vikas Yojana. This initiative is transforming lives by equipping over 200 women with hands-on expertise in jute bag making, sewing, embroidery, and handicrafts.

Expert trainers are guiding participants through modern techniques, innovative designs, and quality standards to ensure their products meet market demands. The focus isn’t just on crafting; it’s on building sustainable businesses. Women are learning everything from attractive packaging to smart marketing strategies, enabling them to reach customers far beyond local markets.

Post-training, many have formed self-help groups, pooling their talents for collective ventures. Others have launched solo enterprises, capitalizing on the surging demand for eco-friendly jute bags and artisanal goods. Orders are pouring in from neighboring regions, providing a steady income stream that bolsters family finances and personal independence.

Sulochna Tiwari, one beneficiary, shared her journey: ‘This program changed everything. I was stuck at home, but now I’m running my own business, contributing to my family, and showcasing my skills to the world.’ Her words echo the sentiments of many, highlighting a surge in confidence and community involvement.

This model of empowerment is proving that with the right skills, rural women can break barriers. As Chamoli’s women thrive, their story inspires similar efforts across Uttarakhand’s mountains, proving economic self-reliance is within reach.
