CHANDIGARH: Renowned Indian wrestler and Congress MLA Vinesh Phogat has voiced strong displeasure over the government’s apparent neglect of sports and athletes. Speaking on February 26, she emphasized that athletes are no longer a priority for the authorities, calling it a deeply regrettable state of affairs.
Phogat pointed to the recent address by the Governor, which made no mention of sports or athletes whatsoever. ‘The condition of sports is dismal,’ she stated firmly. ‘We’re striving to elevate our athletes to the level of other essential sectors, but they’ve slipped off the government’s radar. It’s unfortunate that the Governor’s speech overlooked athletes entirely—this is precisely the issue I’ve raised.’
She highlighted critical shortages plaguing the sector, including around 1,000 vacant coaching positions that remain unfilled. ‘No equipment has been procured,’ Phogat added. ‘When we demand information from the government, they stonewall us. Ministers dodge questions with vague responses, but we’re committed to our fight. We want them to correct their mistakes and deliver real benefits for athletes.’
The wrestler-turned-politician stressed the need for sustained pressure on sports officials. ‘Expecting miracles might be unrealistic, but it’s our duty to keep reminding them of their responsibilities,’ she said. ‘As sports minister, they must prioritize sports development.’
This isn’t Phogat’s first foray into critiquing sports governance. Recently, she targeted the Haryana Wrestling Association over selection criteria for the Federation Cup 2026 trials, arguing that limiting opportunities to medalists from the 2025 Senior State Championships or international events unfairly disadvantages hardworking wrestlers.
Phogat’s advocacy underscores a broader call for accountability in Indian sports administration, urging leaders to refocus on nurturing the nation’s talent pool amid growing concerns over infrastructure and support.
