As summer heat intensifies, many turn to refreshing drinks to beat the swelter. Buttermilk, or chaas, emerges as a favorite, offering more than just cool relief. In Ayurveda, this humble beverage is celebrated as a powerhouse for balancing the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—while aiding digestion and overall well-being.

Rooted in ancient wisdom, buttermilk isn’t a one-size-fits-all remedy. Its true benefits unfold when consumed according to one’s dominant dosha. Consuming it correctly transforms it from a simple drink into a potent medicine that harmonizes the body.

For those with Vata constitution, prone to dryness and irregularity, plain chilled buttermilk can aggravate issues. Add a pinch of rock salt (sendha namak) to warm the digestive fire. This prevents immediate urges to rush to the bathroom and keeps bloating at bay. The salt stabilizes the gut, ensuring smooth digestion without discomfort.

Pitta-dominant individuals, who naturally run hot with fiery tempers and acid reflux, should sweeten their buttermilk with mishri (rock sugar). This cooling combination quenches internal heat, soothes stomach burning, and curbs excess acidity. Digestion flows effortlessly, leaving you refreshed rather than inflamed.

Kapha types, often dealing with sluggishness and mucus buildup, benefit from a dash of dry ginger powder (sonth) in their buttermilk. This prevents phlegm accumulation, clears throat irritation, and keeps nasal passages open. It ignites the digestive flame, countering Kapha’s tendency to dampen it.

Ayurveda teaches that no food or drink affects everyone identically. Tailor your intake to your body’s needs. Recognize your dosha through symptoms or consultation, and let buttermilk become your seasonal ally. This personalized approach turns everyday sips into steps toward vibrant health.
