Beijing, February 25: In a pivotal moment at the United Nations, China’s Counselor Tang Fei from the Permanent Mission to the UN delivered a compelling address following the passage of a draft resolution supporting lasting peace in Ukraine. Speaking at an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly on February 24, Tang emphasized China’s unwavering commitment to fostering a political resolution for the ongoing Ukraine crisis.

The resolution, which garnered 107 votes in favor, 7 against, and 51 abstentions, highlighted global calls for sustained peace. Tang noted the fragile current situation and urged the international community to create a conducive environment for dialogue and negotiation. ‘China hopes the UN General Assembly will play a constructive role in uniting member states around the principles of peace,’ he stated.

China chose to abstain from the vote, aligning with its longstanding principles of respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, upholding the UN Charter, addressing legitimate security concerns, and backing all efforts for peaceful settlements. Tang stressed the need for a root-cause solution to establish a more balanced, effective, and sustainable European security architecture.

As tensions persist, China’s pledge to continue positive efforts signals a diplomatic push amid escalating geopolitical strains. This stance underscores Beijing’s approach to global conflicts, prioritizing multilateralism and stability over confrontation. Observers see this as a potential bridge-builder in divided international forums, with implications for future negotiations.
