In a dramatic twist to the unfolding political drama in Kerala, Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan has cast serious doubts on the alleged attack on Health Minister Veena George at Kannur railway station. Speaking on Wednesday, Satheesan revealed that initial Congress investigations found no evidence of any physical assault by KSU activists.
“Our preliminary probe shows no protester even came close to the minister,” Satheesan asserted. He detailed that when George arrived at the platform, 35 police officers were present alongside just four KSU workers. “There was a protest, sure, but no attack took place.”
The Congress leader promised a thorough party inquiry, emphasizing strict action against any guilty workers. He challenged authorities: “Do you have photos of the attack? With elections around the corner, such theatrics aren’t surprising.”
This stance comes amid fierce accusations from CPI(M), which branded the incident a ‘planned attack.’ Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan rushed to Kannur district hospital, where George was admitted to the ICU with injuries to her neck and hand. A team of doctors is monitoring her condition closely.
CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan alleged the assault happened with Congress leadership’s knowledge, noting it’s unprecedented for a female minister to face such violence in the state. Party workers condemned the event with protests across Kannur, though KSU denied involvement.
KSU state president Aloysius Xavier insisted workers only raised slogans, daring officials to release visuals if an attack occurred. KPCC chief K. Sudhakaran, a Kannur native, echoed this, stating available footage shows no assault on the minister.
As tensions simmer in election season, this controversy highlights deepening rifts between Kerala’s ruling LDF and opposition UDF, with both sides digging in on their narratives.
