Haikou, Hainan – During the 2026 Spring Festival holidays, the customs department in Haikou city oversaw a staggering 2.072 billion yuan in duty-free sales on Hainan Island. This marks a robust 30.8% increase compared to the same period last year, underscoring the booming appeal of Hainan’s free trade port (FTP).
A total of 1.997 million items were sold, reflecting a 21.9% rise year-over-year. Shoppers made 325,000 purchases, up by an impressive 35.4%. This surge highlights how Hainan’s zero-tariff policy is transforming the island into a shopper’s paradise, drawing millions during festive periods.
Under the ‘zero tariff’ initiative of the Hainan FTP, approximately 48.6 million yuan worth of goods were imported. This led to tax savings and exemptions totaling 9.4232 million yuan, providing significant relief to consumers and boosting retail volumes.
Leveraging the advantages of closed FTP customs operations during the holidays, Hainan Port facilitated imports worth 1.426 billion yuan, primarily crude oil and coal. Exports reached 344 million yuan, featuring chemical products and rapeseed oil.
This economic momentum positions Hainan as a key player in China’s trade liberalization efforts. As the FTP matures, experts anticipate even greater growth, potentially reshaping regional commerce and tourism dynamics in the years ahead.
