In a significant diplomatic move, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to arrive in India this week, marking a key moment in strengthening bilateral ties. Landing first in Mumbai before heading to New Delhi, Carney will hold high-level discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on expanding cooperation in trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence, talent exchange, culture, and defense.

The visit, part of a broader tour encompassing Australia and Japan from February 26 to March 7, underscores Canada’s commitment to deepening relationships with its strongest Indo-Pacific partners. According to a statement from Carney’s office, the leaders will explore ambitious new partnerships to boost economic and strategic collaboration.

Carney’s itinerary includes meetings with business leaders in India to identify investment opportunities in Canada and foster new alliances between enterprises from both nations. This comes as India stands as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies and a pivotal player in global commerce and technology. Last year, bilateral trade in goods and services reached $30.8 billion, with India ranking as Canada’s seventh-largest partner in this domain.

The agenda builds on recent momentum. In November, Modi and Carney met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, where they set an ambitious target of $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. Modi highlighted the vast potential for enhanced trade and investment linkages, noting keen interest from Canadian pension funds in Indian companies.

Recent diplomatic engagements further signal warming relations. Earlier this month, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met her Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar at the Munich Security Conference, marking the fifth ministerial meeting since September 2025. Discussions covered deepening cooperation in energy, technology, and trade, built on over 75 years of diplomatic ties and strong people-to-people connections.

Carney’s office emphasized that in an uncertain world, Canada is prioritizing controllable factors: diversifying trade, attracting large-scale investments to create jobs and business opportunities, and forging new foreign partnerships to enhance domestic security, certainty, and prosperity. This visit promises to propel India-Canada relations to new heights, promising mutual benefits in an era of rapid global change.
