Dhaka, February 23 – A brutal turf war in Bangladesh’s Narail Sadar upazila erupted into deadly violence on Monday morning, claiming the lives of four men, including a father and his son. The clashes between two rival groups vying for local dominance have shocked the community in Barakula village, Singhsholpur Union.
Police reports indicate the confrontation began around 5:15 AM when one faction launched a surprise attack on their rivals. The victims were identified as Khalil Mollah, his 38-year-old son Tahjjud Mollah, neighbor Firdous Sheikh (33), and Ostickur Fakir (35), all residents of Barakula.
Narail Sadar Police Station’s Inspector (Investigation) Ajay Kumar Kundu detailed the longstanding feud between the groups led by Khalil Mollah and Khair Mollah. ‘The attackers struck suddenly, leading to a fierce exchange that left three dead on the spot and one succumbing later in hospital,’ he stated.
In response, authorities have bolstered police presence in the area to prevent further escalation. This incident underscores the persistent challenges of localized gang rivalries in rural Bangladesh, where dominance over territory often fuels deadly confrontations.
Meanwhile, in a separate tragedy in Dhaka, a 35-year-old man named Abdur Rahim was lynched by a mob at Postogola cremation ground on suspicion of theft. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital but was declared dead around 5:30 AM after failed resuscitation efforts.
Inspector MD Faruk of the hospital’s police camp confirmed the details, highlighting the dangers of mob justice. Bangladesh’s government has repeatedly vowed stricter laws against violence and crime, but such events reveal the gap between policy and ground reality. As investigations continue, residents urge stronger preventive measures to avert future bloodshed.
