In a dramatic escalation of Mexico’s war on drug cartels, security forces have eliminated El Mencho, the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the country’s most powerful criminal syndicates. The operation has triggered widespread violent protests across multiple states, prompting the Indian Embassy in Mexico to issue an urgent safety alert for Indian nationals.
The embassy took to social media platform X to warn Indians residing in high-risk areas. ‘Dear Indian citizens in Mexico: Ongoing security operations are causing road blockages and criminal activities. Indians in Jalisco State (Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, Guadalajara areas), Tamaulipas State (Reynosa and other municipalities), Michoacan State, Guerrero State, and Nuevo Leon State should stay indoors until further notice,’ the alert stated.
Citizens were advised to avoid areas with law enforcement activities, stay vigilant, remain at home, minimize non-essential outings, and monitor local media for updates. The embassy emphasized following local authorities’ instructions, calling 911 in emergencies, avoiding crowds, and keeping family and friends informed via phone, text, or social media about their location and well-being.
For assistance, the Indian Embassy provided the contact number +52 55 4847 7539. This comes amid heightened tensions following the takedown, which has drawn international attention, especially from the United States, long pressing Mexico to crack down on drug trafficking networks.
The U.S. State Department has also issued alerts for its citizens, releasing numbers for calls from the U.S. and Canada (1-888-407-4747) and from abroad including Mexico (+1 202-501-4444). Recent months have seen intensified U.S. pressure on Mexico to accelerate actions against cartels, though Mexican leaders have rejected direct U.S. military involvement.
As the dust settles from this high-profile killing, the situation remains fluid, with potential for further unrest. Indian nationals and other foreigners are urged to prioritize safety amid the volatile atmosphere.
