In a shocking turn of events at a wedding celebration in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district, what began as joyful dancing spiraled into a brutal knife attack. The groom’s brother, Chandan Nishad, lost his life on the spot, while four others sustained severe injuries. Seven suspects, including two minors, have been apprehended by police in this horrifying incident that has left the community reeling.

The tragedy unfolded late Saturday night in Bhothidih village under Magarlod police station limits. Guests from the bride’s side, hailing from Malgaon in Gariaband district, had arrived for the traditional ‘Chauthiya’ procession. As the band played lively tunes and revelers danced their way towards the groom’s home—a customary pre-wedding ritual—tensions ignited.

Chandan Nishad and his friends took offense to the music blaring from the band. A heated argument quickly escalated between the groom’s side and the musicians. Eyewitnesses report that the dispute turned violent in the middle of the village street, with band members allegedly pulling out knives.

Chandan was stabbed fatally during the melee, succumbing to his injuries immediately. His friend Tarun Dhruv and three others who rushed to intervene were also slashed, suffering critical wounds. The injured were rushed to Magarlod health center for urgent treatment.

Swift police action followed. Upon receiving reports, officers arrived at the scene, dispersed the unruly crowd, and launched an investigation. CCTV footage captured the chilling moments of the stabbing, providing crucial evidence.

Acting on a complaint by Tetku Ram Nishad, authorities arrested seven individuals: Toran Chakradhari, Abhishek Patel, Hinesh Yadav, Tamraj Kavar, and Gulab Diwan, along with two underage perpetrators who have been sent to a juvenile court. Dhamtari SP Shailendra Pandey confirmed that cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been registered, and the accused are now in judicial custody.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of how fleeting disagreements can erupt into tragedy, especially amid the heightened emotions of wedding festivities. Families on both sides are devastated, and the village mourns the loss of a young life cut short by senseless violence. Investigations continue to uncover any underlying motives.
