Dehradun, February 22 – Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment BL Verma declared on Sunday that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, a robust framework of welfare schemes has been established to integrate persons with disabilities into the mainstream.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 30th edition of the Divya Kala Mela at Rangers Ground in Dehradun, Verma highlighted key budgetary allocations. He noted that Rs 375 crore has been earmarked in the current budget for the procurement and fitting of assistive devices through the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO). This substantial funding will directly benefit a large number of differently-abled individuals, enabling them to lead more independent lives.

Director of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Pradeep A., emphasized the fair’s comprehensive approach. It aims to connect disabled entrepreneurs with markets, financial aid, and job opportunities. During the event, initiatives like assistive device registration camps, institutional awareness stalls, and job fairs are underway to bolster empowerment efforts.

Uttarakhand Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh underscored the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) and technological innovations in creating new avenues for persons with disabilities. He stressed that technology acts as an equalizer, free from discrimination. The Governor advocated promoting products crafted by disabled artisans at the mela for international recognition and global market access.

‘Determination and ability can propel persons with disabilities to excellence in any field,’ the Governor affirmed. He described the Divya Kala Mela not merely as an event but as a powerful platform of inspiration that spotlights the vital contributions of differently-abled individuals to India’s economic growth.

Tehri MP Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah portrayed the mela as far more than an exhibition—a catalyst for social change and empowerment. She commended the efforts of the Government of India and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in granting national recognition and bringing the event to Uttarakhand.

Referencing India’s achievements in Paralympic sports, the MP stated that the talent among persons with disabilities continues to honor the nation, proving that opportunities and support can unlock excellence.

MLA Khajan Das hailed the mela as a commendable initiative that offers respect and opportunities to the differently-abled, fostering self-confidence and social inclusion.

The 30th edition of the Divya Kala Mela in Dehradun marks a significant milestone in a nationwide series. Across 29 previous editions, approximately 2,362 disabled entrepreneurs participated, generating business worth over Rs 23 crore. The government has approved loans exceeding Rs 20 crore to support these entrepreneurs, reflecting its commitment to their economic empowerment. Job fairs under the initiative saw 3,131 candidates participate, with 1,007 selections and over 313 job offers extended.
