New Delhi’s organ transplant landscape is witnessing a surge in awareness, thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s powerful appeal during the latest ‘Mann Ki Baat’ episode. Dr. Anil Kumar, Director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), hailed the Prime Minister’s initiative as a ‘noble and inspiring campaign’ that promises to galvanize public participation across India.
In the 131st edition of the radio program, PM Modi shared heartwarming real-life stories of successful transplants, spotlighting a 10-month-old girl from Kerala whose parents’ decision to donate her organs saved four lives. Dr. Kumar emphasized how such narratives dismantle myths, hesitations, and social taboos surrounding organ donation, portraying it as an act of profound compassion that can gift new life to many.
He recounted the transformative journey of a Delhi woman who, post-heart transplant, went from barely walking to trekking Kedarnath and Neelkanth, now thriving in her family roles. Another inspiring case involved a young man dependent on oxygen for basic tasks; after a heart-lung transplant, he conquered Nathu La Pass at 14,000 feet twice.
‘Transplants, when timely, restore not just health but active societal roles,’ Dr. Kumar asserted. He urged people to pledge organ donation instead of letting organs go to waste post-mortem, stressing its universality beyond caste, religion, or community. PM Modi’s call for ‘jan bhagidari’ (public participation) could elevate this to a national movement.
India’s integrated digital network now links transplant hospitals, retrieval centers, tissue banks, and regional organizations, ensuring coordination, transparency, and equitable distribution. NOTTO leads nationally, supported by five regional bodies and state-level entities, forming a robust network spreading awareness.
Despite high demand, donation rates lag. One donor can save up to eight lives through organs like kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, and intestines, plus tissues like corneas, skin, and bones improving many more lives. Dr. Kumar called for pledges via NOTTO’s website or 24/7 toll-free helpline 1800-114-770, noting family consent is crucial.
PM Modi’s endorsement injects fresh momentum, with NOTTO committed to reaching every village for timely transplants and saved lives.
