New Delhi witnessed a significant update in its metro infrastructure naming conventions as Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, chairing the State Name Authority (SNA), finalized names for several upcoming and existing stations. This decision underscores the importance of aligning public transport nomenclature with the cultural, historical, and social fabric of Delhi’s neighborhoods.

In a detailed review of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the authority scrutinized 21 proposed station names. Out of these, 12 were retained as originally suggested, seven underwent modifications for better clarity and relevance, and two received complete overhauls to better represent local sentiments.

CM Gupta emphasized that metro stations are more than mere transit points; they serve as landmarks encapsulating the essence of their surroundings. ‘We deliberated extensively on each name, factoring in local identity, historical significance, and feedback from residents and elected representatives,’ she stated. The goal was to eliminate any potential confusion for commuters while preserving geographical accuracy.

Stations keeping their original names include Majlis Park, Bhalswa, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Deepali Chowk, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Sur Ghat, Jharoda Majra, Burari, Pushpanjali, and Maujpur-Babarpur. These names were deemed perfectly suited to their locales without needing alterations.

Modified names aim to provide sharper directional cues and stronger local ties. For instance, Prashant Vihar becomes Uttari Pitampura-Prashant Vihar; Jagatpur is now Jagatpur-Vazirabad; Derawal Nagar transforms into Nanak Pyau-Derawal Nagar; Khanpur to Khanpur-Vayusenabad; Sonia Vihar to Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar; Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 to Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar; and West Enclave to Mangolpuri Kalan-West Enclave.

Completely renamed stations are North Pitampura, now Haiderpur Village, and Pitampura’s Madhuban Chowk, re-christened to honor longstanding village identities. This move ensures names resonate with the ground reality and public aspirations.

The Chief Minister assured that future proposals backed by logical, community-driven arguments would receive fair consideration under established guidelines. This initiative not only enhances commuter experience but also fosters a deeper connection between Delhi’s metro network and its diverse populace.
