Mumbai’s film circles are buzzing with nostalgia as director Anil Sharma marked a milestone for his early career gem. On Sunday, the veteran filmmaker took to X, formerly Twitter, to celebrate 35 years since the release of ‘Farishhte,’ the 1991 action-drama that brought together Bollywood’s biggest stars.
Sharing iconic posters from the film, Sharma penned a heartfelt caption: ‘Farishhte’s 35 years… A saga of courage, brotherhood, and destiny. When legends united on screen, cinema became larger than life. Time passes. Greatness endures.’ He paid tribute to the late icons, writing, ‘Dharm ji, Vinod ji, Sridevi ji, and Sadashiv ji will forever live in our hearts.’
Released on February 22, 1991, ‘Farishhte’ was directed by Anil Verma and starred Dharmendra as Veeru and Vinod Khanna as Dheeru, two small-time crooks on a vengeful quest against a tyrannical king. Sridevi shone as the leading lady, with Rajinikanth adding his magnetic presence. The ensemble cast included Jaya Prada, Swapna, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and the unforgettable Sadashiv Amrapurkar.
What made ‘Farishhte’ a blockbuster? Its pulsating songs, courtesy of music maestro Bappi Lahiri. Tracks like ‘Bhai-Behen Ka Pyaar,’ ‘Tere Bina Jag Lagta Hai Suna,’ ‘Saat Kunwaron Mein Ek Kunwari,’ ‘Jhenda Ooncha Rahe Hamara,’ and ‘Raja Ka Baj Gaya Baza’ became instant hits, voiced by legends including Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Aziz, Amit Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal, Shabbir Kumar, and Asha Bhosle.
The film’s gripping narrative follows the brothers avenging their sister’s husband’s murder, blending high-octane action with emotional depth. Clocking in at 3 hours and 8 minutes, it was the last on-screen pairing of Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna, produced by Satti Shourie and Mona Shourie Kapoor.
Even today, ‘Farishhte’ holds a special place in fans’ hearts, proving that true cinematic magic never fades. Sharma’s post has reignited memories, reminding us why these classics endure.
