New Delhi, February 22. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Prahlad Joshi declared on Sunday that India stands firmly committed to accelerating the global clean energy transition, making it more equitable and development-oriented. This approach ensures benefits reach both people and the planet alike.

Responding to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on social media platform X, Joshi highlighted that India’s clean energy journey is built on concrete actions, ambitious targets, and inclusivity. ‘Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, we are scaling up renewable energy capacity on a massive scale while energizing industries, livelihoods, and innovation,’ he stated.

Guterres had praised India for demonstrating that clean energy expansion and industrial growth can coexist. In his post, he urged, ‘Let’s transform climate imperatives into development opportunities and make the clean energy transition faster and fairer for people and planet.’

India is emerging as a global leader in renewable energy expansion. The nation has set bold targets for 2030: reducing greenhouse gas emission intensity by 45% from 2005 levels, achieving 50% of electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, and creating a carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tons.

Remarkably, India has already achieved nearly two-thirds of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for climate action four years ahead of schedule. This progress underscores the country’s proactive stance in combating climate change.

Meanwhile, at the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ in the national capital, Guterres warned about the risks of division in AI development. He stressed the need for global interoperability standards to yield better outcomes.

‘International cooperation is harder than ever today,’ Guterres noted. He cautioned that escalating technological competition, without shared foundations, would lead to fragmentation as regions and countries adopt divergent policies and standards.

Agreement on system checks and risk assessment methods is key to interoperability, he added. Guterres called for science-based AI guardrails to protect people while accelerating innovation. These rules must build trust, provide business clarity, and propel innovation in the right direction.
