Mumbai’s music scene came alive with nostalgia as playback singer Hariharan launched his new album ‘Jaan Meri’. During the event, he opened up about his deep bond with the legendary R.D. Burman, fondly known as Pancham Da.
In an exclusive conversation, Hariharan described Pancham Da not just as a musical genius but as his personal mentor. ‘I learned so much from him,’ he reflected, his voice filled with emotion. Pancham Da’s timeless compositions continue to inspire generations, blending innovation with soulful melodies that defined Bollywood’s golden era.
What set Pancham Da apart, according to Hariharan, was his childlike innocence and simplicity. ‘There was a child inside him – that’s what made him unique,’ Hariharan said. ‘His phrases and compositions brimmed with brilliance, yet he remained so unpretentious.’
Hariharan highlighted how Pancham Da’s work was ahead of its time. ‘His tracks are incredibly modern and open-ended. You can fuse anything into them, and they only get better,’ he explained. Even today, Pancham Da’s fusion-friendly tunes dominate remixes and contemporary music.
Recalling personal anecdotes, Hariharan shared how he often sang as a co-singer with Asha Bhosle under Pancham Da’s direction. ‘We traveled together many times. He guided me like a mentor,’ he added. With over five decades in the industry, Hariharan cherishes these moments that shaped his career.
The singer also weighed in on the ongoing debate about performers at weddings. ‘I do all kinds of concerts and stay open-minded,’ Hariharan stated. ‘But I need a dignified atmosphere to sing peacefully. If it brings joy in the right setting, it’s perfect.’
Hariharan’s reflections remind us of Pancham Da’s enduring legacy, a beacon for musicians striving to push creative boundaries.
