Imphal, February 21: In a poignant display of leadership and solidarity, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh hurried to Delhi upon hearing the heartbreaking news of the demise of BJP MLA Wungjagoin Walte from Thanglon assembly constituency. Walte, a prominent voice from the Kuki-Zo community in Churachandpur district, breathed his last on Saturday after a prolonged battle with injuries sustained during the ethnic violence that erupted in the state.
The MLA’s tragic journey began on May 3, 2023, amid the escalating clashes between communities in Manipur. Severely wounded the following day in an attack by a mob in Nagamapal area after meeting former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Walte suffered critical injuries leading to partial paralysis. Tragically, his driver was killed in the same assault.
Rushed to Delhi via air ambulance, Walte underwent extensive treatment across multiple hospitals. He later continued recovery efforts in Churachandpur, showing gradual improvement. However, his condition deteriorated recently, prompting an airlift from Imphal to New Delhi on February 8 under the guidance of the new government led by CM Yumtham Khemchand, ensuring access to advanced medical care.
Despite tireless medical interventions, Walte could not be saved. CM Khemchand, upon receiving the sorrowful update this afternoon, immediately departed from the state capital to Delhi, where he paid his last respects to the departed leader. Numerous other political figures have extended condolences, reflecting the widespread grief.
Throughout the ongoing ethnic crisis, Walte had urged unity among the Kuki-Zo community members. His untimely death has cast a shadow of mourning over Manipur’s political landscape, particularly within tribal circles, leaving a void in representation and advocacy.
