In a landmark moment for India’s technological self-reliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the HCL-Foxconn semiconductor plant in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. Speaking via video conferencing from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) complex, PM Modi hailed the initiative as a pivotal step toward establishing India as a key player in the global chip ecosystem.
The new Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility, developed under the joint venture India Chip Private Limited, represents an investment exceeding ₹3,700 crore. This state-of-the-art plant will specialize in producing display driver chips essential for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and various consumer electronics.
PM Modi emphasized Uttar Pradesh’s rapid emergence as a hub in India’s burgeoning semiconductor landscape. ‘The nation is steadfastly marching towards self-sufficiency in chip manufacturing, a cornerstone for sectors like electronics, automobiles, and digital technologies,’ he stated.
Once fully operational, the plant is expected to process around 20,000 wafers per month, significantly reducing India’s dependence on chip imports and fortifying the domestic supply chain. This development promises thousands of direct and indirect jobs for engineers, technicians, and skilled workers, while fostering ancillary industries, startups, and chip design centers.
Strategically located near the upcoming Jewar Airport, the facility will enhance logistics and accelerate global connectivity. PM Modi also referenced the recent India AI Impact Summit in Delhi, where global leaders praised India’s tech vision, marking this week as historic in the country’s technological journey starting strong into 2026.
