New Delhi witnessed a landmark diplomatic engagement as Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for high-level talks aimed at fortifying ties between the two Global South powerhouses. The meeting, held amidst the AI Impact Summit, resulted in the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and a joint statement underscoring deepened strategic partnership.
PM Modi extended a warm welcome, reminiscing about the reciprocal hospitality during his visit to Brazil last year. He praised President Lula’s visionary leadership, which has long nurtured India-Brazil relations. ‘Every interaction with President Lula reinforces his profound friendship towards India,’ Modi remarked, highlighting how Lula’s visit invigorates their strategic collaboration.
Trade took center stage, with Modi announcing a bold target: elevating bilateral trade beyond $20 billion within five years. Brazil, India’s largest trading partner in Latin America, sees this ambition not just as numbers but as a testament to mutual trust. A large business delegation accompanying Lula symbolizes this confidence. Expansion of Mercosur ties promises further economic integration.
Technology and innovation emerged as pillars of cooperation. India and Brazil are establishing a Center of Excellence for Digital Public Infrastructure in Brazil, prioritizing AI supercomputers, semiconductors, and blockchain. ‘Technology must be inclusive, bridging gaps for shared prosperity across the Global South,’ Modi emphasized.
Energy collaboration remains a bedrock. From hydrocarbons to renewables, ethanol blending, and sustainable aviation fuel, partnerships are accelerating. Brazil’s role in the Global Biofuels Alliance and its proposal to co-chair the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) were commended, leveraging Brazil’s expertise for resilient futures.
Agreements on critical minerals and rare earths mark a pivotal step in supply chain resilience. Defense ties are strengthening, reflecting strategic alignment and trust. Agriculture and animal husbandry cooperation will bolster food security, while India’s pharmaceutical exports to Brazil will rise, alongside promoting Ayurveda for holistic healthcare.
On global platforms, the duo pledged to amplify Global South voices. Modi stressed diplomacy over conflict, condemned terrorism unequivocally, and called for UN reforms. This visit cements a partnership poised to shape collaborative horizons for years ahead.
