In a heartbreaking incident, a 17-year-old boy took his own life by jumping in front of a moving metro train at Uttam Nagar East station in Delhi on Friday morning. The tragic event, confirmed by Delhi Police, has left the city mourning and raised fresh concerns about youth mental health.

The incident occurred around 11:07 AM when the teenager, identified as Ashwini Dagar from Najafgarh, leaped from platform number 1 onto the tracks just as a train heading towards Dwarka approached. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos as the train screeched to a halt, and passengers panicked amid the sudden disruption.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro), Kushal Pal Singh, arrived promptly at the site. The body was carefully removed from the tracks and sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for post-mortem examination. Metro services on the affected line were temporarily suspended, causing delays for commuters during peak hours.

Investigations revealed that Ashwini had recently passed his Class 12 exams and was preparing for competitive tests at a coaching center in Uttam Nagar. Police sources indicate he had been grappling with personal issues for some time, leading to severe mental distress. As the only child in his family, where his father works as a contract driver for DTC, the loss has devastated his loved ones.

‘We are conducting a thorough inquiry under Section 194 BNSS to ascertain all facts,’ DCP Singh stated. This incident underscores the urgent need for better mental health support for students under academic pressure. Authorities urge anyone facing similar struggles to seek help from helplines or counselors immediately.
