New Delhi witnessed a wave of tributes on Wednesday as prominent political figures across the spectrum paid homage to Gopal Krishna Gokhale, the moderate leader of India’s freedom struggle and pioneering social reformer, on his death anniversary.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah led the remembrances, posting on X: ‘Gopal Krishna Gokhale inspired the youth to join the independence movement and worked tirelessly to eradicate untouchability and drive social reforms. Known for his candid views on national interests, I bow to him on his punyatithi.’
The sentiment echoed through other leaders. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari hailed Gokhale as ‘the skilled politician who laid the foundation of the freedom struggle through constitutional politics, a social leader and great reformer.’ He offered humble respects on this day.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized Gokhale’s ideological contributions, stating, ‘Your role in directing the independence movement and social reforms remains an invaluable legacy for nation-building. Your ideals will forever inspire democratic consciousness.’
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Gokhale’s thoughtful leadership, noting his efforts in constitutional reforms, education expansion, and social justice. ‘He established integrity, intellectual clarity, and moral responsibility as the bedrock of public life,’ Sarma wrote, honoring his lifelong service to the nation.
Even from the opposition, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge remembered Gokhale as one of the greatest freedom fighters and Mahatma Gandhi’s political guru. ‘His invaluable contributions against colonial rule continue to inspire generations toward justice, freedom, and nation-building,’ Kharge posted.
Gokhale’s legacy as a bridge between moderate constitutionalism and the broader independence movement endures. Born in 1866, he founded the Servants of India Society in 1905 to promote ethical governance and social upliftment. His influence shaped early 20th-century Indian nationalism, mentoring figures like Gandhi and advocating for education, women’s rights, and poverty alleviation.
