In a major blow to Sri Lanka’s campaign at the T20 World Cup 2026, star pacer Matheesha Pathirana has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to injury. The right-arm slinger suffered a hamstring strain in his left leg during the crucial match against Australia, forcing him to leave the field in visible agony. Sri Lanka, who have already qualified for the Super 8 stage, now turn to Dilshan Madushanka to fill the void in their bowling lineup.

Pathirana’s absence compounds Sri Lanka’s woes, especially after captain Wanindu Hasaranga was earlier sidelined by injury. Madushanka, making a comeback to the T20I side after his last appearance on July 27, 2024, brings much-needed experience and pace to the attack. Sri Lanka’s batting consultant Vikram Rathour confirmed the grim update ahead of the Zimbabwe clash, stating that Pathirana’s participation looked highly unlikely.

Despite the setbacks, Dasun Shanaka’s men have been in scintillating form, winning all three group stage matches. Their latest triumph was an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Australia, where Pathum Nissanka smashed an unbeaten 100 off 52 balls, and Kusal Mendis contributed a brisk 51 off 38. Chasing 182, Sri Lanka cruised home in just 18 overs, losing only two wickets.

With Super 8 qualification secured, attention now shifts to the final group game against Zimbabwe on February 19. The updated squad includes Shanaka (c), Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Kusal Mendis, Kamindu Mendis, Kusal Perera, Charith Asalanka, Janith Liyanage, Pawan Rathnayake, Dushan Hemantha, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka, and Pramod Madushan. Fans will be hoping Madushanka can replicate his past heroics and keep Sri Lanka’s dream alive.
