Italy’s FM to Join Trump’s Board of Peace as Observer

In a significant diplomatic move, Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has confirmed his attendance at the inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ in Washington as an observer. Local media reports highlight this development amid growing international interest in the initiative.

Tajani emphasized Italy’s commitment to staying at the forefront of global peace efforts. ‘I will represent Italy in Washington for this first Board of Peace meeting to be present when discussions on Gaza’s reconstruction and Palestine’s future take place,’ he stated to ANSA news agency.

Originally established to oversee post-Hamas-Israel war reconstruction in the region, the Board—chaired by Trump—has expanded its mandate to address a broader spectrum of international disputes. This shift has sparked concerns that it could emerge as a rival to the United Nations.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday in Washington. Notably, Italy had previously rejected participation, citing constitutional restrictions that prevent joining organizations led by a single foreign leader. Despite this, Tajani insists on the importance of listening and engaging.

The European Union Commission has also decided to attend as an observer, with Commissioner Suica representing them. EU spokesperson Guillaume Mercier clarified that they are not becoming members but will participate to advance ceasefire efforts in Gaza and international reconstruction initiatives.

Since Trump launched the Board at the Davos World Economic Forum in January, around 19 countries have signed its declaration, though many have expressed reservations about the current format.

As the largest donor of humanitarian aid to Palestinians—contributing 1.65 billion euros since the October 7, 2023, escalation—the EU is keen to ensure its voice is heard in any reconstruction plans, preventing unilateral US actions.

This convergence of major players underscores the high stakes involved in reshaping Middle East peace processes outside traditional multilateral frameworks.
