New Delhi witnessed a pivotal diplomatic encounter on Wednesday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Spanish President Pedro Sanchez. The bilateral meeting at Hyderabad House focused on strengthening ties in defense, trade, technology, and beyond.
The discussions delved into expanding cooperation across key sectors including economy, health, digital technology, and innovation. PM Modi later described the meeting as highly productive, highlighting mutual commitments to deepen India-Spain relations.
President Sanchez arrived in the capital to participate in the AI Impact Summit 2026, a global forum examining artificial intelligence’s role in industry and governance. Before attending the summit, he prioritized the high-level talks with PM Modi, who shared updates on X (formerly Twitter).
In his post, PM Modi noted, ‘Had a great meeting with President Pedro Sanchez in Delhi. We discussed ways to boost India-Spain friendship, especially in defense, security, technology, and other areas. Our countries will celebrate 2026 as the India-Spain Year of Culture, Tourism, and AI, fostering deeper people-to-people ties. A large delegation from a Spanish university is also here, which is heartening and will further connect our peoples.’
He added that the historic Free Trade Agreement with the EU would significantly enhance economic partnerships with Spain, opening new opportunities for citizens of both nations.
The Ministry of External Affairs echoed these sentiments on X, stating that the leaders explored avenues to fortify the India-Spain strategic partnership.
Prior to the meeting, President Sanchez addressed the Spain-India CEO Forum, urging Indian businesses to invest in Spain. He emphasized Spain’s strengths in growth, stability, talent, and innovation during interactions with senior executives.
This engagement builds on longstanding diplomatic relations established in 1956. Sanchez’s latest visit follows his first trip to India in October 2024, marking the first such presidential visit from Spain in 18 years.
As both nations gear up for collaborative initiatives in 2026, these talks signal a new chapter in Indo-Spanish collaboration, promising economic growth and technological advancements.
