In a significant push towards sustainable energy in Bihar, more than 500 consumers in Samastipur district have received subsidies under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. This flagship initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to provide free electricity to households by installing rooftop solar panels.
According to electricity department executive engineer Anand Kumar, solar panels have been installed on the roofs of 550 homes so far, with nearly 4,000 applications pouring in from eager residents. The scheme offers substantial financial assistance: Rs 30,000 for a 1 kW panel, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW, and Rs 78,000 for 3 kW systems.
The event at Patel Maidan turned into a celebration of green energy adoption. Fifteen consumers, now enjoying zero electricity bills thanks to their solar setups, were honored with certificates of appreciation. Bank representatives were on hand to guide attendees through financing options, making the transition to solar power seamless.
Engineer Kumar emphasized the scheme’s transformative potential. ‘Every household should seize this opportunity,’ he urged. ‘By simply applying online or through local offices, residents can slash their energy costs and contribute to India’s renewable energy goals.’
Eligibility is straightforward: applicants must be Indian citizens with a suitable rooftop, an existing electricity connection, and no prior solar subsidies. This initiative not only lightens the financial burden but also empowers communities to generate their own clean power.
As Samastipur leads by example, the district’s success story could inspire other regions in Bihar. With 3,970 applications processed and subsidies disbursed to 511 beneficiaries, the momentum is building. The government continues to encourage more participation, promising a brighter, greener future for all.
