In a landmark moment for bilateral relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday the upgrade of India-France ties to a ‘Special Global Strategic Partnership.’ This elevation, revealed during high-level talks in Mumbai, signals deeper collaboration across defense, innovation, trade, technology, and people-to-people contacts.
The leaders hailed the partnership as a pillar of global stability and progress. PM Modi welcomed President Macron to Mumbai, India’s bustling commercial hub often dubbed the nation’s gateway to the world. ‘Our relationship is built on trust, shared values, and a common vision for the world,’ Modi emphasized.
France has long been one of India’s oldest strategic partners. Now, both nations are committed to expanding beyond traditional diplomacy toward global peace, prosperity, and technological advancement. A key highlight was the inauguration of an H125 helicopter final assembly line in Vemgal, Karnataka. This facility will produce helicopters capable of operating in high-altitude and challenging environments, serving India’s needs and enabling exports worldwide.
The project promises jobs and skill development for Indian youth while integrating MSMEs into global supply chains, aligning perfectly with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. Defense cooperation received a major boost with upgraded agreements fostering co-design, co-development, and co-production of advanced platforms. Notably, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and France’s Safran will form a joint venture, strengthening India’s domestic defense industry, reducing import reliance, and enhancing access to precision weapons.
The leaders also agreed to establish an annual Foreign Ministers’ dialogue to review the Horizon 2047 roadmap and ongoing collaborations in education, culture, skills, and mobility. Marking 2026 as the India-France Year of Innovation, they launched the India-France Innovation Network to connect businesses, startups, incubators, research institutions, and industry leaders.
In technology, commitments were made for cooperation in critical minerals, biotechnology, and advanced materials. This partnership not only fortifies bilateral bonds but positions both democracies as key players in shaping a secure and innovative global order.
