New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam turned into a hub of innovation as the India-AI Impact Summit and Expo 2026 unfolded. A standout feature was the joint exhibition by India’s Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). This showcase zeroed in on leveraging artificial intelligence to revolutionize food security and enhance the Public Distribution System (PDS).

The collaboration between DFPD and WFP, spanning over two decades, has now pivoted towards AI-driven advancements. These technologies aim to inject unprecedented transparency and responsiveness into food distribution networks, ensuring benefits reach the intended recipients more efficiently.

DFPD Secretary Sanjeev Chopra, speaking exclusively, highlighted the transformative potential. ‘The food sector has long been seen as routine, not ripe for AI intervention. Yet, we’re pushing beyond transparency to achieve real responsiveness. AI integration is streamlining operations and delivering superior services to beneficiaries,’ he noted, expressing satisfaction with the innovations on display.

UN Resident Coordinator Stephen Pszenny praised the summit’s organization and the compelling presentations. ‘As the new UN Resident Coordinator, I’m impressed by the scale and execution of this AI summit. The robust partnership between DFPD and WFP in improving food distribution is particularly inspiring,’ he remarked.

WFP India Country Director Elizabeth Forbes underscored the partnership’s longevity and impact. ‘Our over 20-year alliance with DFPD is shining through in these AI solutions, which are genuinely improving lives and bolstering food security,’ she affirmed.

This exhibition is a cornerstone of the India-AI Impact Summit, embodying India’s commitment to responsible AI. It emphasizes shaping AI for humanity, inclusive growth, and sustainable futures. By applying cutting-edge tech to critical sectors like food security, India is solidifying its position as a global AI innovation leader, directly benefiting everyday citizens.
