In a poignant gesture during his visit to Mumbai, French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron honored the victims of the 2008 terror attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. The couple laid wreaths and observed a moment of silence, symbolizing the unbreakable bond between France and India in the fight against terrorism.

Following the tribute, Macron took to social media platform X to express his solidarity. ‘At the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, we paid tribute to the victims of the 2008 attacks. For their families and loved ones, and for India, France stands with you. In the face of terrorism, with unity and resolve,’ he posted.

The visit coincided with Macron’s attendance at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed his French counterpart with an embrace, highlighting the personal rapport between the two leaders. Modi shared on X, ‘Delighted to meet my friend President Macron in Mumbai. He shared how much he loves this city and enjoyed his morning jog.’

Modi further emphasized the strengthening ties, stating, ‘Welcome to India! Our nations look forward to elevating our partnership to new heights. Our discussions will bolster cooperation across sectors and contribute to global progress.’

Macron also engaged with Bollywood luminaries, posting photos with the caption, ‘With icons of Indian cinema. Culture unites us.’ Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Governor Acharya Devvrat greeted Macron at the airport.

The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the visit’s significance, noting bilateral meetings with PM Modi and the launch of India-France Year of Innovation 2026. This trip is set to accelerate the vibrant strategic partnership between the two democracies, focusing on innovation, defense, and technology.

As Macron proceeds to the AI summit on February 19, expectations are high for groundbreaking announcements that could shape future collaborations in artificial intelligence and beyond. The emotional homage to 26/11 victims underscores a shared commitment to countering terror, reinforcing Franco-Indian solidarity on the world stage.
