In a powerful show of solidarity, 14 former cricket captains from around the world have penned an open letter to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, expressing deep concern over the treatment and health of jailed former Premier Imran Khan. The list includes Indian legends Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, led by Greg Chappell.

The signatories, a who’s who of cricket history, feature names like Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Belinda Clark, Ian Chappell, Allan Border, Mike Brearley, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh, and John Wright. Their letter highlights Imran Khan’s monumental contributions to the sport, particularly captaining Pakistan to the 1992 World Cup triumph—a victory etched in cricket folklore for its grit and leadership.

‘Beyond the boundary,’ the letter states, ‘Imran served as Pakistan’s democratically elected Prime Minister, a role that transcends political divides.’ Recent reports of his deteriorating vision while in custody over the past two-and-a-half years have alarmed his fellow cricketers. They emphasize the values of fair play and respect inherent in the game.

‘Despite his stature as a former national leader and global sporting icon, we are troubled by the conditions of his imprisonment,’ the captains write. They demand immediate access to specialist medical care of his choice, humane jail conditions meeting international standards, regular family visits, and a fair, transparent legal process without delays.

Cricket has long bridged nations, they remind Sharif. ‘Our shared history on the field teaches us that competition ends with the stumps, but respect endures.’ Imran embodied this spirit throughout his career. This appeal, rooted in sportsmanship and humanity rather than legal interference, calls on Pakistani authorities to uphold dignity and justice.

The letter’s emotional close underscores a universal plea: honor the man who inspired generations, ensuring he receives the treatment befitting his legacy. As global cricket watches, this united front from former skippers amplifies calls for fairness in Pakistan’s political arena.
