MUMBAI – French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron kicked off their three-day India visit with a poignant tribute to the victims of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks on Tuesday. The couple laid wreaths at the site, honoring those lost in the 26/11 tragedy that shook the world.
This emotional start sets the tone for high-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Discussions will cover defense cooperation, maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, emerging technologies like AI, and pressing global challenges. Both leaders aim to deepen the strategic partnership that has flourished since 1998.
In the evening, Modi and Macron will inaugurate India-France Innovation Year 2026. They will address a gathering of industrialists, startup founders, researchers, and innovation leaders, highlighting collaborative opportunities in cutting-edge fields.
Macron’s itinerary includes participation in the AI Impact Summit in Delhi, underscoring the focus on technological advancement. Upon arrival at Mumbai airport, he received a warm welcome from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Governor Acharya Devvrat.
Prime Minister Modi expressed enthusiasm on X, stating, ‘India looks forward to your visit and taking our relations to new heights. Our conversations will strengthen cooperation across sectors and contribute to global progress.’ He added a personal touch: ‘See you in Mumbai and later in Delhi, my dear friend Emmanuel Macron.’
This marks Macron’s fourth visit to India and his first official trip to Mumbai. Previous visits include his debut in March 2018, the G20 Summit in September 2023, and as Republic Day chief guest in January 2024.
The India-France alliance spans defense, space, energy, and technology. Officials from the Prime Minister’s Office indicate a comprehensive review of progress under the strategic partnership during the bilateral meeting. This visit is poised to propel these ties further amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
