In a remarkable stride towards a tuberculosis-free India, Gir Somnath district in Gujarat has emerged as a shining example under the state government’s ambitious ‘Bhagirath Abhiyan’. Launched with the vision of ‘Healthy India, Prosperous India’, this initiative is spearheaded by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel with full support from the central government.
Health workers, ASHA volunteers, and para-medical teams are fanning out across villages, remote hamlets, and even forested areas to conduct door-to-door health screenings. The Active Case Finding (ACF) drive ensures no corner is left untouched, bringing diagnostic services right to people’s doorsteps.
Local beneficiary Ashwin Bhai Jhala shared his gratitude, highlighting the ‘Swasthya Sahay Yojana’ that provides financial aid for medical bills. He noted that even social and political figures can adopt TB patients under special schemes promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ensuring comprehensive care.
Jagubhai Mori, another resident, praised the scheme’s inclusivity, stating it reaches the last mile, benefiting even the most underprivileged. The campaign has drawn widespread participation from NGOs, industrialists, philanthropists, and private hospitals, who are stepping up as ‘Nikshay Mitrs’ to support patients.
These volunteers not only facilitate government aid but also distribute nutrition kits packed with essential supplements to aid recovery. Nikshay Mitra Mandal Bhai Rawalia recounted how patients experience relief post-medication, further bolstered by these kits.
District TB Officer Dr. Sheetal Ram revealed that funds are channeled through the District Collector to taluka levels, making all tests free. The district has upgraded from just two testing machines to six new ones, funded by the District Mineral Foundation and district administration, now available at every taluka. Each test, costing around Rs 1,500 otherwise, is now accessible without charge.
This multifaceted approach underscores Gujarat’s resolve. With strong leadership, a dedicated health infrastructure, and community involvement, Gir Somnath proves that defeating TB is within reach. As the nation rallies under ‘TB Harega, Bharat Jeetega’, this district’s success story inspires a nationwide movement.
