Shillong has emerged as a beacon of economic growth in India’s Northeast, with Governor C.H. Vijayashankar announcing that the state’s economy has nearly doubled over the past seven years. Addressing the Meghalaya Assembly during the budget session on Monday, he highlighted the state’s remarkable trajectory from ₹29,508 crore in 2018 to an impressive ₹59,626 crore in 2025.
This surge underscores the resilience of Meghalaya’s people and the government’s long-term vision. The governor pointed out that the state recorded a robust 9.66% real GSDP growth in 2024-25, securing second place nationally after Tamil Nadu. Post-COVID, Meghalaya stands alone in sustaining an average 10% growth for two consecutive years—a feat he described as extraordinary.
Guided by ‘Vision 2032’, the development agenda aims to triple the economy from 2022 levels, propel per capita income, and rank Meghalaya among India’s top 10 states for sustainable development goals. Implementation is driven by the ‘Meghalaya Excellence Framework’, a comprehensive strategic roadmap.
Key sectors like agriculture, roads, power, water supply, investment promotion, IT, communications, and tourism are witnessing rapid advancements. Social pillars including health, education, livelihoods, and security nets are being fortified. The state is executing 15 externally aided projects worth over ₹12,000 crore, supported by multilateral agencies, focusing on infrastructure, energy, farming, water conservation, and tourism.
Central schemes like PM-DEVIN are boosting connectivity and tourism infrastructure. Private investments exceeding ₹1,800 crore have been attracted, with ambitions to secure over ₹8,000 crore by 2032, potentially creating 50,000 jobs. Administrative reforms, digital platforms, and eased regulations have enhanced transparency and ease of doing business.
The Economic Survey 2025-26 commended Meghalaya’s community-based climate resilience model, featuring large-scale spring mapping and conservation efforts. With sustained focus on infrastructure, energy reforms, and sustainability, the governor expressed confidence in achieving inclusive growth and prosperity for all.
