Bengaluru’s Kannada film star Darshan marked his 49th birthday behind bars on Monday, locked up in judicial custody over the brutal murder of a fan. While he spent the day in confinement, a massive crowd of supporters gathered outside his RR Nagar residence, turning the streets into a festive scene with flags bearing his image and resounding chants of his name.

Police scrambled to manage the throng, erecting barricades to prevent chaos and maintain order. The outpouring of devotion underscores Darshan’s enduring appeal, even as he faces serious charges in the killing of Renukaswamy from Chitradurga district.

The case erupted in June 2024 when Darshan, his close associate Pavithra Gowda, and 15 others were arrested for the abduction and savage beating death of the victim. Investigations revealed the murder stemmed from personal grudges, allegedly triggered by Renukaswamy sending offensive messages to Pavithra, fueling rage over Darshan’s relationship with her despite his marriage.

Pavithra, now seeking bail, filed a petition in the 57th Sessions Court, citing her daughter’s crucial exams as reason for her release. Prosecutors opposed it vehemently, and the court will decide after hearing both sides.

Recent twists include photos of Darshan enjoying special privileges in Bengaluru Central Jail, prompting his transfer to Ballari Jail. Police submitted a voluminous 4,000-page chargesheet detailing the conspiracy involving multiple players, whose roles remain under scrutiny.

Darshan briefly tasted freedom on bail, but the Supreme Court revoked it following Karnataka Police’s appeal, leading to re-arrests. As fans rally unabated, the case continues to grip the industry and public alike, questioning celebrity influence and justice’s reach.
