Jaipur’s legal circles buzzed with anticipation on Monday as the Rajasthan High Court was set to delve into the long-standing blackbuck poaching case. However, the proceedings took an unexpected turn when the presiding judge recused himself, pushing the matter to the Chief Justice for reassignment.

The hearing centered on the state government’s appeal against the acquittal of co-accused celebrities Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Neelam, Sonali Bendre, and local resident Dushyant Singh. These individuals were cleared by the trial court in 2018 due to insufficient evidence, a decision that sparked controversy and prompted the state’s legal challenge.

This infamous case dates back to 1998 during the filming of ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ near Kankani village in Jodhpur. Allegations surfaced that members of the film unit, including Bollywood star Salman Khan, hunted protected blackbucks. While Salman was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison plus a fine, his co-stars walked free.

Salman promptly appealed his conviction and secured bail, keeping the saga alive for years. The state’s bid to reinstate charges against the others hit a snag today as the judge cited prior involvement in related discussions, deeming it inappropriate to preside.

All eyes now turn to the Chief Justice, whose decision on bench allocation could reignite this high-profile drama. Legal experts note that such recusals ensure impartiality, but they also prolong a case that has captivated the nation for over two decades.

The blackbuck poaching saga underscores India’s wildlife protection laws and the accountability of public figures. As the court navigates these waters, stakeholders await clarity on whether justice will finally close this chapter or extend the suspense further.
