That year, the Federal Communications Commission consulted with AT&T, settling on 911—short, distinct, and dialable on any phone without letters.
But AT&T’s rollout was slow. Enter Alabama Telephone Company (ATC), headquartered in Haleyville. Eager to pioneer, they beat the giant to the punch, wiring the town’s police station with the special equipment. This bold move sparked a nationwide wave, transforming emergency response forever.
