London’s beloved Diplocat Palmerston, the charismatic feline who captured hearts worldwide, has passed away peacefully in Bermuda at the age of 12. The news was shared on his official social media page, where he boasted over 105,000 devoted followers on X, formerly Twitter.
Rescued from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Palmerston’s journey from street stray to Chief Mouser at the UK’s Foreign Office was nothing short of legendary. Appointed on April 13, 2016, he patrolled the corridors of Whitehall with unmatched prowess, keeping rodents at bay and charming diplomats alike.
After four illustrious years, Palmerston retired in 2020, penning a humorous farewell letter via his handlers. In it, he expressed delight in ‘working from home’ during the pandemic and a desire for a quieter life away from the limelight. Signed with his paw print, the missive highlighted his massive following as proof that furry diplomats play a vital role in Britain’s global endeavors.
But retirement didn’t last long. In February 2025, Palmerston made a triumphant return as ‘Feline Relations Consultant’ to Bermuda’s Governor, residing at Government House. There, surrounded by the team that adored him, he took his final breath on February 12.
Palmerston’s announcement post read: ‘Palmerston, an extraordinary Diplocat, passed away peacefully on 12 February. ‘Pami’ was a cherished member of the Government House team in Bermuda.’
His legacy endures among Britain’s political cats. Named after 19th-century Prime Minister Lord Palmerston, he joins icons like Winston Churchill’s Nelson and Humphrey, who served under Thatcher, Major, and Blair. Palmerston’s wit, selfies, and unyielding spirit made him a social media sensation, proving even cats can navigate the highest echelons of power.
As fans mourn, tributes pour in, celebrating a life that bridged the whimsical world of pets with the serious business of diplomacy. Rest in peace, Chief Mouser.
